Day 12 Camino Birds

Not a ton of energy or creativity so this will probability be a blah blog. Today Carla and I walked 18 miles and took 34,000 steps in remote farmlands marked by tiny towns that would not exist but for the commerce pilgrims bring. Our destination today is San Juan de Ortega population 20. It consists of 2 hotels/ bar/restaurants and a 16th century church. We met half the townsfolk. It tools us 90 seconds to stroll around town. Now the birds. When we are in woods we hear many different birds. When we are going through fields of wheat, barley and canola not so much. The stork is a common site in the villages. Storks are very religious as they always seem to nest on the tops of churches in bell towers and spires. I tried to capture some shots but they are a bit far off. We passed a talkative caged parrot in Navarrete He called me guapo which was a nice compliment. He whistled at Carla and then spewed out a bunch of words and sayings- in Spanish of course. While walking in a heavily wooded area, Carla and I heard a cuckoo bird. Yes, thoughts of German clockmakers surfaced. Those guys do a great job capturing that distinctive sound. We’ve heard cuckoo birds on a number of days. Most mornings as we head out we are greeted by a chorus of morning doves. Can’t forget those church chickens. Birds are the only real wildlife we’ve seen except for bugs, butterflies and snails. Carla and I do enjoy watching and listening to the Camino birds- sometimes it just gives us something to do. The internet is super weak here. Tomorrow we are in Burgos a much bigger town and I’ll post the pictures and videos then.
