Day 23- The Test

Today was to be a long day on the Camino- almost 18 miles, cold temps, a serious climb, and a chance of some rain. I went full tactical mode in my rain gear. The day started with a little rain and the sun shining to the east. I kept a casual pace. In the first few hours no less than 5 pilgrims passed me. There was a time I would never had allowed that to happen. I’m mellower now (some may not believe that). The rain and wind picked up as I started the day’s big ascent to the highest point to date on the Camino. The wind began to howl. The rain turned to hail then sleet. At some point on the descent it turned to snow. I remembered the words I heard yesterday- just enjoy the day. I tried. The last 10 miles were a mixture of rain and sun. Boy was I looking forward to a hot shower after the wet cold day. I got to my destination and discovered I did not have a private bedroom and bath. My bed was in the Albergue. Just enjoy the day. So I did not shower and I am sleeping in my clothes. I will wake up and hit the trail. A fine hotel awaits me in Salamanca. I knew at some point I would have to stay in an Albergue (barracks, hostel whatever). I guess it’s fitting it fell at the end of my toughest day so far. I’m still happy I am here.

The climb

The other side. I am wearing a rain jacket I bought in Moab Utah in 1998 and wore maybe once before today but carried on countless bike trips.

My bed is the one with the green pack. It’s just 6 o’clock and the snoring has already started
