Today’s stage was a short one, much of the time spent on the old Roman route designated with pillars (see below). I unexpectedly met Dominic at breakfast and we walked the route together, talking much of the way. My mind was focused on the conversation and the trail as it got quite challenging at times due to rocks, scree, grades and the everpresent water- so not much lofty thinking to relate. I battled the water hazards and I have to admit, one stretch beat me but my waterproof trail shoes kept my feet and socks dry. We used the road for the last few miles to avoid many impassably drenched sections of the trail. We arrived in the tiny, crumbling old town of Calzada de Bajar before noon. Dominic and I are staying in a house built in 1747. We have the place to ourselves and the owner, Lola, did our wash which was good timing as this morning the waitress at breakfast spilled a glass of orange juice all over my pants. Lola is very nice and she is cooking us dinner tonight and setting up a breakfast buffet for tomorrow. There is only one bar/restaurant in town and the owner, who also owns the only 2 other places to stay, in jest said he was in competition with Lola as he wants to own all the lodging in town. I guess he is the Old Man Potter of Calzada de Bajar. He cooked us a great lunch. Looking forward to a home cooked meal for dinner.
